The Best Season for Trekking
Autumn is widely regarded as the premier trekking season in Nepal. After the monsoon rains wash the atmosphere clean, the skies remain consistently clear and dry, offering unobstructed panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. The trails are in excellent condition, vegetation is lush and green, and temperatures at all altitudes are comfortable for trekking. This is peak season, so trails and teahouses will be busy — booking early is strongly recommended.
Season Highlights
Stable weather with dry conditions and crystal-clear skies
Best mountain views and perfect visibility across all regions
Moderate temperatures: 10-20°C at lower altitudes, -5 to 10°C at higher elevations
Most popular season — advance booking is essential
Trails are lush and green following the monsoon rains

Cold & Clear at Lower Altitudes
Winter in Nepal brings cold temperatures but often remarkably clear skies, particularly at lower altitudes. High-altitude passes may be snow-covered and impassable, but lower-elevation treks reward you with stunning mountain views, empty trails, and a serene atmosphere. This is an excellent time for trekkers who prefer solitude and don't mind layering up. Tea houses at lower altitudes remain open and welcoming.
Season Highlights
Cold but clear skies at lower altitudes with excellent visibility
Snow at high altitude — some mountain passes may be closed
Temperatures: 5-15°C at lower altitudes, -10 to -5°C at higher elevations
Significantly fewer crowds — ideal for those seeking solitude
Lower tea house prices and easier permit availability
Spring is the second-best trekking season in Nepal and a favorite among nature lovers. The hillsides come alive with spectacular rhododendron blooms in vibrant shades of red, pink, and white. Temperatures rise steadily, making the days warm and pleasant. While afternoon clouds may occasionally roll in at higher altitudes, mornings are typically clear with excellent mountain views. Wildlife is more active during this period as well.
Season Highlights
Stunning rhododendron blooms and colorful forests across the hills
Rising temperatures with some afternoon cloud build-up at altitude
Temperatures: 15-25°C at lower altitudes, 0-15°C at higher elevations
Second-best season after autumn — excellent trekking conditions
Longer daylight hours for more time on the trails

Not Recommended for Most Treks
The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to most of Nepal, making popular trekking routes muddy, slippery, and often hazardous. Leeches are widespread on the trails, cloud cover obscures mountain views, and the risk of landslides increases significantly. However, experienced trekkers can explore rain-shadow regions north of the Himalayan divide, where the mountains block monsoon moisture and conditions remain surprisingly dry.
Season Highlights
Heavy rainfall with muddy, slippery trails and leeches on lower routes
Persistent cloud cover — limited to no mountain views on most treks
Temperatures: 20-30°C at lower altitudes, 5-15°C at higher elevations
NOT recommended for most trekking routes and regions
Exception: Rain-shadow areas remain dry (Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, Trans-Himalayan)

Important Tips for Every Season
Book your trek at least 2-3 months in advance for autumn (peak) season to secure permits and accommodation.
Always carry proper layering gear regardless of season — Himalayan weather can change rapidly.
Consult your trekking agency about current trail and pass conditions before departure.
Travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation up to 6,000m is strongly recommended year-round.
Acclimatization rest days are essential above 3,000m to prevent altitude sickness.
Spring trekkers should carry antihistamines if prone to pollen allergies during the bloom season.
