Gosainkunda Holy Lake

Trip Facts

  • Destination:Nepal, Langtang Region
  • Trip Grade:Moderate
  • Total Duration:

Gosainkunda Holy Lake is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Nepal. Located in the altitude of 4360 m, the lake lies in the Langtang national park, Rasuwa district surrounded by the picturesque Langtang mountain range with mesmerizing views.

The lake is very famous amongst the devotees of Hindu. It is believed that the lake has been created by Lord Shiva himself with the thrust of his trident into a mountain to extract water to quench his thirst and pain he suffered after drinking the poison. Every year thousands of devotees visit the lake on Janai Purnima that falls in the month of August, to take bath in the lake. There is a local belief that a dip in the lake washes away all their sins. Along with Gosaikunda, there are several other beautiful lakes with their own legends and myths like Nagkuna, Bhairab Kunda, Saraswatikunda to name a few.

The people in these places are mostly Tamang and Tibetan origin, whose culture goes back hundreds of years. The craftsmanship, dress, traditionally built stone houses and the beautifully carved wooden porches reflect the solitude and the serenity of the Himalayan scenery.

Apart from the religious value and rituals, you will be mesmerized by the belt of Langtang Himalayas and relatively untouched diversity in flora and faunas, beautiful landscapes and waterfalls. And you can experience the purest side that nature offers. The trek to Gosaikunda leads to Langtang region- the gateway to the unprecedented kingdom of the great Himalayas filled with rich natural beauties, majestic waterfalls, mesmerizing diverse landscapes, deep forests of bamboos, oak and blooming rhododendrons that also provide shelter to old villages rich in culture, beautiful paddy terraces and numerous monasteries and full of welcoming smiles.

It is moderate in difficulty level and is most popular among the trekkers who are looking for wonderful trekking experience within the short period of time and in close proximity to Kathmandu city some 165 km in the North. You will find it easy to plan and execute in a weeklong stay.
